An introduction to the Plan Charity

Plan is a registered charity (No: 276035). We work with some of the world's poorest children, in countries where one out of five die before the age of five, and those who are lucky enough to survive often go hungry and have no chance of learning to read or write.

The Plan approach
Why choose Plan?

We sit down with these children, their parents and the community to plan practical ways to provide them with all of the things we take for granted; so together we build schools, drill wells, train health workers and help families to support themselves. We strive to ensure that children are actively involved in the decision-making process, working with adults who have learned to value their contribution.

A million people across the world sponsor a child with Plan. Their commitment benefits many children and entire communities. Our aim is that when we leave a community after 10-15 years, the children have a better start in life and have the confidence to build a better future for generations to come. Their energy can provide the impetus to change their world.

An overview of Plan:

  • Plan is an international humanitarian child-centred development organisation operating in 45 of the world's poorest countries
  • We have no religious, political or government affiliation
  • Children are at the heart of everything we do
  • Plan was founded in 1937 by John Langdon-Davies and Eric Muggeridge in response to the plight of children left orphaned by the Spanish Civil War
  • We now work in South and Central America, the Caribbean, Africa and Asia
  • We have over 1 million supporters worldwide and over 110,000 in the UK
  • Our projects benefit an estimated 10 million children and their families
  • Our vision is to live in a world in which all children realise their full potential
  • Our mission is to achieve lasting improvements in the quality of life for children in developing countries
  • We strive to achieve our mission by: addressing basic needs, building relationships and promoting children's rights

Plan's five main areas of work:

  • Growing up healthy: Every child has the right to grow and develop in a safe, healthy environment. 150 million children are malnourished in the world. Plan helps by constructing health clinics, providing staff and medicines; helps to improve the quality of medical treatment, provides immunisation for children against infectious diseases; supplies ante-natal and post-natal care for women and provides and trains midwives and community health workers.
  • Learning: Every child has the right to a primary education. Over 113 million children worldwide are not enrolled at school. Without good quality basic learning and life skills, children cannot hope to achieve their potential. Plan seeks to improve quality of education and access for children by building and equipping schools, training teachers and providing educational opportunities through after school clubs, for children who have dropped out of school or who cannot normally attend school because they have to work.
  • Livelihood: Improving the income levels of families enhances the future prospects for their children. Families all over the world often survive on as little as 70p a day. Our work tackles the root causes of poverty. If a household has a better income the children are more likely to go to school and grow up healthy. We help families in poor communities to become self-sufficient, by providing vocational skills training; improving agricultural techniques to increase crop yield; providing credit and micro-finance schemes, and by providing small business and management training.
  • Habitat: Children have the right to live in a safe and healthy environment. Over 1 billion people don't have access to safe water and over 2 billion don't have a safe and clean place to go to the toilet. As a result a child dies every 15 seconds from water-bourne diseases. Plan helps communities create decent living conditions - access to clean water, adequate sanitation, good quality housing, waste disposal services and sustainable natural resources.
  • Building relationships: Plan builds and supports relationships between children, families, communities, and the wider society. We create links between people in need and those who can help; we promote cross-cultural appreciation and learning; we give children a voice and help place children's needs on the agenda at a local, national and international level.

The Plan approach:

  • We seek to empower communities to improve their own lives. We provide the funds and the skills to enable the communities to implement and manage the projects themselves.
  • Our expertise lies in helping communities to help themselves. Not hand outs, but a hand up for the community.
  • Grassroots approach, emphasis on survival, education and empowerment enables delivery of real and effective results.
